This particular poem, ‘Lucy Gray,’ was written sometime after his other “Lucy” poems and is not often grouped with the others. These include, ‘ Strange Fits of Passion Have I known,’ ‘ She Dwelt Among Untrodden Ways,’ ‘ I Travelled Among Unknown Men,’ ‘ Three Years She Grew in Sun and Shower‘ and ‘ A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal.’ Rather, she is a character comprised of all the people that Wordsworth ever loved and lost.Ĭritics have referred to five of Wordsworth’s poems as the “Lucy Poems”. Many critics have argued over the identity of Lucy, but most have concluded that she does not represent one single person. Sometimes, Lucy symbolizes a lover, and other times she symbolizes the pure and innocent love a father has for his daughter. Throughout his poetry, the name Lucy nearly always refers to one he loved and lost. In his poem, ‘ Strange Fits of Passion have I known,’ he describes the crippling fear of losing the one he loves. Sometimes, he finds comfort in thoughts of the afterlife. Wordsworth’s works of poetry are filled with themes of death. There are of course pressures to being the 'chosen one' but that kind of situation also prepares you for life - you can turn your back on plans because you know things and know you can go elsewhere. In contrast, Makareta is the one the family is preparing to be great, and her life blossoms and flourishes in unexpected directions. Raised away from her family, apart from one brief visit, she watches and waits and it is heartbreaking. Mata in particular was character I felt especially attached to. I'm curious to see how this translates to film. Spanning decades, I enjoyed reading about the New Zealand they lived in, and the evolution of their lives. Their lives vary greatly, and I loved each of them. The book follows three cousins Mata, Makareta, and Missy. Initially I had trouble keeping track of what was happening and who it was happening to, but this clicked into place fairly early, and once it did I never lost track of what was happening. When possible I prefer to read the book first. Cousins is one I was especially wanting to read because it was recently made into a movie. I loved Chappy, which I read a couple of years ago, and the handful of her short stories I read in high school so I am looking forward to reading all her writing and getting more of a sense of her as a writer. Patricia Grace is one of the authors I am currently focused on, in terms of buying and reading.
